Good Advice

One of my friends from graduate school who is living on the west coast has made an amazing change. She is a huge encouragement to me as she has gotten healthy by making smart choices and walking/running races. She looks amazing in her pictures. She is a beautiful person inside and out. I have really been floored by her success. As I start the exercise portion of my healthy lifestyle, I've been reaching out for ideas, encouraging words, thoughts on how should I proceed, and motivation for walking/jogging a 5 K later this year.

I asked Meg for some encouraging words and where to begin. Though she is not a gastric bypass patient she is someone fighting the bulge like we all are. She has given me some great advice. I thought I would share it here: http://www.facebook.com/notes/meg-dumez/5k-preparation/10150132895932534?notif_t=note_tag

I think I shall start with the list of real motivators besides being healthy and being slimmer. I want to not only have written words, but a visual reminder of what I am working towards. So being all honest and putting it all out there here are my motivators.

1. I really really want to buy a pair of cute underwear from Victoria's Secret
2. I want to buy a non-plus size wedding dress
3. I want to cut my medicine in half in the next 18 months
4. I want to be able to walk up a set of stairs and not be winded
5. I want to be able to ride a roller coaster again
6. I want to sit down on an airplane and not pray that the seatbelt will fit
7. I want to be able to look down and see my toes, be able to reach my toes, and paint my toes myself!!!!!

These are my most closeted secrets. Yes, they are very girly. Yes they might be somewhat shallow or maybe someone will take those items for granted, but when I think about my life and my health these are other things that I do think about. Yes, by all means I did this for health. I did this so that I would not be 300 lbs on my 30th birthday. I did this so that I wouldn't die of heart attack or diabetes at 35, but I also did it for a new life. I did it for a new me. I did it to be better and to get some of those dreams I thought were impossible to reach.

So tonight I walked, and walked. 45 minutes later I was still walking at a pretty good pace post surgery. I played Wii and I laughed with a friend. We walked together. We walked for health. We walked for loosing weight. We walked to support each other, but we also walked so that the "fat girl in us all could get that kiss from the perfect guy, or meet the man of her dreams and fall in love" along with knowing that the "fat girl can have the fairytale" it is just our version of it and we weren't going to give up!

  1. I posted something like this on OH forums, its under post op goals/dreams. My surgeon actually gave me the idea. He told me that before I go in and everything, to keep me motivated and happy and help shed the 40+ pre-op lbs I need to lose, I should keep track of my foods, and questions...and just write down goals.

My number one is to go skydiving. they make you pay extra if you weight too much.
